Whether you're working on word families, puzzle skills, or have a child obsessed with construction trucks, these little puzzles are tons of fun!

This {FREE} printable has four -and Word Family construction puzzles:  "band," "land," "sand," and "hand."

Children learning to read can construct and deconstruct the words one letter at a time.  They can also use the picture to self-check their spelling!

Younger children can practice their emerging puzzle skills by focusing on the picture...and you can still point out the letters to help them recognize them!

To download this {FREE} -and Word Family Construction Puzzle file, you will need an account at Teachers Notebook, but once you log in you can download tons of other free and inexpensive printables!!

Do you (or your kids!) love all things construction?  Be sure to check out my {FREE} construction-themed game, and Construction Preschool Packet and the free poster at the end of this post!

Ladybug Valentine Heart Card Craft

This little ladybug card / heart shape valentine craft is a winner in so many ways--my daughter chose it from a variety of ladybug crafts, and she had a ton of fun personalizing it (check out the "beautiful eyelashes")!  We originally found the idea on Pazzles and then made a few changes to accommodate the 2-5 year olds I have here.

Simple Supplies:
  • red, pink, and black construction paper
  • scissors
  • white paint and paintbrush
  • markers and/or pens
  • glue stick

Easy How-to:

1.  Prepare the pieces:  1 big red heart for the wings, 1 big pink body (see the picture at the right...you want the pink tip to match the point on the red heart), 2 small pink hearts for the cheeks, 2 pink antennae, 6-8 small black hearts for the spots.

2.  Older children can write a note on the pink body.  Make sure you mark off the top part where the child will be gluing all the pieces together!

3.  Let your child assemble the ladybug heart shaped Valentine card!  Use white paint for the eyes and mouth.  You can use the picture at the top of this post as a guide for assembly.

4.  For younger children, leave off the big pink body.  Let them decorate the red heart with markers and black heart spots.  Supervise closely!!  This is also a great time to review the names of shapes like "heart," "circle," and "oval."

5.  Ta da!!  A work of art and a gift card!!

Math & More With Pom Poms!!

Pom poms are tons of fun for preschoolers, toddlers, and even older children!  Earlier this week I showed you how to make pom poms...today I'm going to share a dozen math, science, motor skill, and exploration activities you can do with your preschoolers and pom poms!

Early/Pre- Math & Science:
(colors, counting, sorting, sequencing, patterns)

1.  Make pom poms in two different colors and give your child the pom poms and two tins or small pans.  Review the colors and let him sort them based on color.

2.  Make pom poms in two different sizes and see if he can identify the big and small poms and sort them by color.

3.  Make a pom pom snake by lining the pom poms up in a row.  Change it to a pattern snake and let your child complete the last pattern as you go.

4.  Use a "hungry puppet" that eats pom poms. Have the puppet ask your child for "two pom poms" and then gobble them up!  Vary the number to your child's skill level.

5.  Line several tupperware buckets up to make a train--you can even place a real toy train engine at the front of the line!  Label the buckets by taping numbers to them that your child can count to.  Pull the train into the station and have your child fill its load by placing the correct number of pom poms into each "car."

6.  Use colored plastic bowls that match your pom poms to make a pond.  Pretend your pom poms are frogs that need to get to their spot in the pond!  Let your child match up the frogs to their homes.  Rib--itt!!

Motor Skills:

7.  Give your child a set of pom poms, a cupcake pan, and a large measuring spoon.  Let her move the pom poms around and explore how they respond to her touching them and lifting them with the spoon!

8.  Make pom pom launchers by placing a fork on the table and setting the pom pom on the tip of the handle.  Let your child (carefully) smack the tong part of the fork and watch the pom pom fly!

9.  Place a jar (like an empty, cleaned peanut butter jar) on the floor next to a short chair.  Let your child stand on the chair and try to drop the pom pom into the jar.  If it's too easy, put her on a higher chair.  If it's too hard, let her stand on the floor.

Exploration:
(textures, discovery, language)

10.  Go on a pirate treasure hunt looking for pom poms!  If your preschooler is older, make a treasure map showing where you hid the pom poms!

11.  Fill a sensory bin with pom poms and plastic balls.  Give it to your child with a measuring cup or dump truck.  Let her explore!

12.  Give your child two cups with pom poms in them and a third empty cup.  Place about 1/4 cup (or less!) water in the one of the cups.  Let your child explore!  Talk about what she feels!

You can use any of these activities by themselves, as part of another activity, or even as rotations for centers or a challenge course!  I'd love to know if you play with pom poms!!

How to Make a Pom Pom!

Today I'm going to show you how to make a pom pom...on Friday, I'm going to share a dozen math, science, exploration, and motor skill activities you can do with your pom poms and preschoolers!

Making pom poms is really easy!  First, you need to gather yarn and scissors.  Then follow these steps:

1- Make a yarn bundle by wrapping the yarn around two fingers about thirty times.  If you want bigger pom poms, use more fingers and wrap the yarn more times!

2- Tie a piece of yarn around the middle of your yarn bundle once.

3- Slide the yarn bundle off your fingers, tighten the tie, then knot it 3-4 more times.  This knot must be very tight.

4- Cut all the loops!

5- Trim the edges and fluff your new pom pom!

Ta da!!  Super easy...now you can make a pile of pom poms and check back in a few days for fun ways to use them!!

Sponge Painting for Valentines

Let's see...preschoolers, paint, Valentine's, hearts, sponges...it sounds like a recipe for success!

Preschoolers love to paint, and I love to see the endless ways they combine paint to create their masterpieces.  We love to "sponge paint," and then I realized, "This would be the perfect Valentine's craft!"  We're going to wait a couple more weeks, but I will share more pictures on Facebook when we do it.  For now, you'll have to settle with the above picture from the last time we sponge painted!

Valentine's Sponge Painting:

Simple Supplies:
  • sponges cut in heart shapes (you can cut them into other shapes too!)
  • paint
  • cardstock

Easy How-To:

1- Let each child choose three paint colors to go in their tin.

2- Make sure they understand how to make sponge "stamps," and give them a sponge heart (or two!).

3- Let them create a Valentine's card with their paint and sponge!  When it's dry, you can add text...though it isn't really necessary!

Have you sponge painted before?  Have you made plans for Valentine's?  I always love to hear from you!

Hibernation E-book Opportunity

Announcements, Announcements, Announcements!!

Okay, just one announcement, but I am very, very excited about it!  We've been talking about hibernation, and doing different hibernation activities, for several months now.  It's been a subject that keeps drawing us back to it because it is so engaging.  SO, I decided to create an e-book with dozens of hibernation activities!  Most of the activities include printables, but many are also experiential and fine arts projects.  The activities also meet Common Core and Texas State Kindergarten standards!

Each activity has an introduction page that includes instructions for the activity and biology about different animals.  For example,

Do you know...

What animal's heart freezes when it hibernates?
What animal's entire body turns to ice during hibernation?
What air-breathing animals hibernate under water?

Before I release the hibernation e-book, I would love to have some of you look over the pages, try out some of the activities, and give me some feedback.  Do the instructions make sense?  Are there any typos?  Are there other errors I missed because I've been looking at it for so long?   The activities are targeted for a 5-year old (kindergarten) audience, but can easily be adapted for 4-6 year old children.

If you would like to help me review the hibernation e-book, please fill out the form below.  You will receive a portion of the book (for free!) to review and I will include your name or blog on an acknowledgements page at the end of the e-book.  If you have trouble with the form, please send me an email so I can fix it!!

Also, I am looking for 5-10 bloggers to host a stop on my blog tour at the end of January/beginning of February.  As a host, you would post an interview, guest post, or other related post to help spread the word about this hibernation e-book, and promote that post on your regular social media sites.  I will have freebies and giveaways available for your readers during and at the end of the tour.  Host bloggers will also receive a free copy of the completed e-book and inclusion on the acknowledgements page at the end of the hibernation e-book.

I'm so excited, I can hardly wait!  I'd love to have you join the adventure this month/next month!!  Just fill out the form and let me know what you'd like to do.  If you have any trouble with the form, send me an email (preschoolpackets at gmail dot com) so I can fix it!

Thanks so much!!

Update:  Dear friends,  Thank you so much for your fast response--I had nearly all the positions I needed filled within two days!  I am closing the form at this time.  If you are interested in hosting a stop for the blog tour, please email me--I have filled the spots I was hoping for, but I can still add a few more blogs.  Thank you again!!!
